Wildlife federation: Enbridge oil spill didn't spur change in regulations

Nearly two years after an Enbridge Energy Partners pipeline ruptured in Marshall, laws covering pipeline safety are inadequate, according to a new report released by the National Wildlife Federation.

The 19-page report made available Monday looks at the patchwork regulatory approach between the various states and describes how a key federal agency -- the Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration -- is denied the authority to "prescribe the location or routing of a pipeline."

ExxonMobil cleaning Louisiana oil pipeline spill

(CBS/AP) TORBERT, La. - ExxonMobil Corp. says it is cleaning up about 80,000 gallons of oil that spilled from a pipeline in a rural Pointe Coupee Parish, northwest of Baton Rouge.

The company says the pipeline was shut down Saturday night after a loss of pressure. The spilled oil was discovered on Sunday.

Detroit oil spill remains a mystery 10 years later

Detroit— The first call came in from one of the control towers at drawbridges along the Rouge River.
 
It was April 10, 2002, and by the time the reports of large amounts of oil in the water reached U.S. Environmental Protection Agency officials, the spill likely had been under way for at least a day. By the time the contaminated flows had stopped, as many as 250,000 gallons of oil had spread over three miles of the Rouge, into the Detroit River and been carried as far south as Lake Erie.

'Fracking' advocates, critics gearing up in Mich.

LANSING, Mich.  The fight over hydraulic fracturing is coming to Michigan, along with a significant environmental test for the Great Lakes state's Republican governor.

House Democrats plan to discuss a bill Wednesday that would further regulate what is known as "fracking," a method of extracting natural gas from underground. The House's natural gas subcommittee released a report Tuesday encouraging more natural gas production, arguing it can provide energy independence and high-wage jobs.
